...Players from the Midwest and other parts of the United States gathered in the clubs of Harlem, a black neighborhood in New York, to hold jam sessions every night. From this came a new style of performance called be-bop (also called bop for short). Bop added new ideas to the three elements of rhythm, melody, and harmony. Originally, jazz was called off-beat music because the accents on the first and third beats of a four-beat rhythm were shifted to the second and fourth beats. But bop divided the four beats into eight parts intuitively, and placed the accent on the "to" part of "1, 2, 3, 4, ...". *Some of the terminology that mentions "be-bop" is listed below.
