A port city in Primorsky Krai, eastern Russia. It is located in Nakhodka Bay, a branch bay in the northwest of the inner bay of American Bay, which opens into the Sea of Japan. It has a population of 159,800 (1999). It has a calm, ice-free port and is the terminus of a branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The port is an important international port in the Russian Far East and also a fishing base. There are industries such as ship repair, tin cans, fishing complexes, and reinforced concrete building materials. American Bay was named after the Russian warship America, which accidentally "discovered" it in the mid-19th century, and Nakhodka means "something found" (Nakhodka Bay was "discovered" in 1859). Port construction began in 1944, and it developed into a city in 1950, but as its cargo receiving capacity reached its limit, a new port, Vostochny (Eastern), the largest in the Russian Far East, was built in Wrangel Bay, 18 kilometers east in the same American Bay. Nakhodka has a Japanese cemetery and the Japanese Consulate General was located there from 1967 to 1993. The city also has sister city relationships with Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, and Otaru City, Hokkaido.
