A method of forming textures (sound composition principles) in music that emphasizes the vertical aspect of sound. Used in contrast to polyphony, which emphasizes the horizontal flow of sound, it has both contrasting and overlapping aspects with multiphony, in which different sounds are played simultaneously. When the same or octave-related sounds are layered, a unison or parallel octave texture is formed, which is called monophony and is considered a type of homophony. Whether parallel octaves are considered polyphony is fluid, depending on the consciousness of the music creator. A typical example of homophony is when a single melody is supported by harmony, and there are monody with a harmonic accompaniment by basso continuo, strict harmonic homophony in which each note of the melody is given a chord, and free harmonic homophony, which deviates more freely from this. Note that the French word homophonie simply means a chord that is enharmonic.
