Homo habilis

Japanese: ホモ･ハビリス（英語表記）Homo habilis

This is the scientific name given by L. Leakey and others in 1964 based on human fossils unearthed at the Olduvai site in northern Tanzania, and means "Habilis man," or "dexterous man." In recent years, the fossils reported by R. Leakey and others from the eastern part of Lake Turkana in Kenya have become famous, and hominin fossils of this lineage have also been identified among the fossils from the Swartkrans site in South Africa. In addition to the skull, fossils of limb bones are also known, but the overall picture is not necessarily well understood due to the fact that many specimens are incomplete and detailed research has not progressed.

1964年にL.リーキーらが，タンザニア北部のオルドバイOlduvai遺跡出土の人類化石にもとづいて記載した学名で，〈ハビリス人〉すなわち〈器用なヒト〉を意味している。近年はR.リーキーらが報告したケニアのトゥルカナ湖東部からの化石が有名であり，また，南アフリカのスワートクランス遺跡からの化石の中にも，この系統の人類化石が指摘されている。頭骨のほか，体肢骨の化石も知られているが，不完全な標本が多いことと，くわしい研究が進んでいないことから，全体像は必ずしもよくわかっていない。
