Polish politician. Member of the Peasant Party from 1930 to 1935. During World War II, he went into exile, and became deputy chairman of the Polish National Council in London, deputy prime minister of the government in exile, and interior minister. In 1943, he became prime minister of the government in exile after the death of W. Sikorski, and in 1944 negotiated with the Allied powers, including the Soviet Union, over borders and a postwar government. In 1945, he returned to Poland after the Yalta Conference and became deputy prime minister of the Provisional Government of National Unity. However, after the Potsdam Conference agreement on the establishment of a free Poland was broken and the oppression of non-Communist forces intensified, he went into exile in the United States in 1947. In 1948, he became president of the International Peasant Organization.
