Bononcini, Giovanni Battista
Born: July 18, 1670, Modena
Died July 9, 1747. Vienna Italian composer. Born into a family of musicians, he studied the cello, and in 1687 was appointed cellist at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, and conductor at the Basilica of San Giovanni in the same year. He lived in Rome from 1691 to 1798, where he was recognized as a composer with his opera Serse. From 1799 to 1711, he devoted himself to composing opera in Vienna, but in 1720 he was invited to London as director of the Royal Academy of Music, where he became embroiled in a dispute with Handel over the primacy of opera. He then moved to Paris in the early 1730s and Vienna in the 1740s, where he composed Te Deum. His major works were the operas Polifemo (1702) and Griselda (22).
