A city in northeastern Egypt at the entrance to the Suez Canal on the Mediterranean side. Population 460,000 (1992). In Arabic it is called Būr Sa'īd. It was built in 1859 during the construction of the Suez Canal on a narrow strip of sand between the salt lake of Lake Manzala and the Mediterranean Sea. It was named after Said Pasha, who was the governor (wali) of Egypt at the time the construction began. Before that, it was just a village with a population of about 4,000, but when the canal was opened in 1969, the population rapidly increased. In 1925, Port Said became too small, so Port Fouad was built on the opposite bank as housing for engineers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
