A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes, family Labridae. It is found in various parts of Japan south of Hokkaido and in the South China Sea, and is one of the most common wrasses in Japan. Its body is long and slender and laterally compressed. Juveniles and females have two black vertical stripes and seven rows of reddish brown spots on their bodies, giving them an overall reddish appearance, while males have a bluish body with orange spots along the rows of scales. In addition, a large black spot followed by a dark vertical stripe stands out on the pectoral fin. Due to this difference in body color, males are often called blue wrasses and females are called red wrasses. Total length 26 cm (usually 15-20 cm). It lives in the transition zone from rocky areas to sandy bottoms, and burrows into the sand when it senses danger or when resting at night. It also hibernates in the sand during low temperatures. Its main food is small benthic animals. It is the most delicious of the wrasses, and is cooked in teriyaki and nanbanzuke, and is called gizami and enjoyed along the Seto Inland Sea coast. Males (blue wrasses) are especially prized in the Osaka and Kobe areas. [Tadakazu Araga] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
