Xin-shou (English spelling)

Japanese: 休書 - きゅうしょ（英語表記）xin-shou

A divorce letter used in China since ancient times. It is also called a risho. It consists of a divorce document and a statement granting permission to remarry. There is some debate as to whether it was a necessary procedure for divorce, but it is at least one of the means of proving divorce and is undoubtedly a document of evidence. The Japanese "mikudarihan" (three lines and a letter) from the Edo period was modeled after this.

古くから中国において使われた離婚状。離書 (りしょ) ともいう。離婚文言と再婚許可文言とから成る。離婚の必要手続であったか否かについては問題があるが，少くとも離婚の立証手段の一つであり，証拠文書であることにまちがいない。日本の江戸期の三行半 (みくだりはん) は，これにならったものである。
