Kisling, Moïse
Born: January 22, 1891 in Krakow
[Died] April 29, 1953. Sanary French painter. A Jew born in Poland, he was a representative painter of the École de Paris. After studying impressionist painting under his teacher Pankiewicz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, he moved to Paris in 1910. He was friends with Braque, Picasso, J. Gris, and M. Jacoblat, and was strongly influenced by A. Derain. During World War I, he joined the Foreign Legion and was injured. After the war, he gained French citizenship and held a successful solo exhibition in 1919. He fled to the United States during World War II, and returned to France after the war. He specialized in portraits and nudes, freezing melancholy and sensuality in bright colors. His most famous work is Kiki of Montparnasse (1925).

フランスの画家。ポーランド生れのユダヤ人で,エコール・ド・パリの代表的画家。クラクフの美術学校で師のパンキエビッチから印象派の画風を学んだのち,1910年パリに出る。ブラック,ピカソ,J.グリス,M.ジャコブラと交わり,A.ドランに強く影響される。第1次世界大戦中,外人部隊に入隊して負傷。戦後フランス国籍を得,19年個展で成功。第2次世界大戦中アメリカに亡命,戦後フランスに戻る。肖像,裸婦を得意とし,明るい色彩のうちに哀愁,官能性を凍結させた。代表作『モンパルナスのキキ』 (1925) 。
