Hokkaido Shrine

Located in Miyagaoka, Chuo Ward, Sapporo City. Four deities, Okunitama-no-kami, Onamuchi-no-kami, Sukunahiko-no-kami, and Emperor Meiji, are enshrined here. After the Meiji Restoration, Emperor Meiji ordered the development of Ezo, and in 1869 (Meiji 2), the Jingikan performed a ceremony to appease the spirits of the three deities involved in land development and industrial development. The head of the Hokkaido Development Commission was dispatched to Sapporo, and in 1871 the shrine was founded as a small national shrine in the current Maruyama area. In 1899, it was promoted to a large national shrine. In 1964 (Showa 39), Emperor Meiji was enshrined, and the shrine was renamed Hokkaido Shrine. Within the precincts is Kaitaku-jinja Shrine, which enshrines Mamiya Rinzo. The annual festival is held on June 15th. The event continues through the following day, the 16th, with a portable shrine procession and a march by the Restoration Loyalist Corps, and is known as the Sapporo Festival.
