Yeh Ting

Yeh Ting

Chinese military leader. Born in Huiyang County, Guangdong Province. His courtesy name was Xiyi. He was a member of the 6th class of the Baoding Military Academy, and in 1922 he became the commander of the Sun Yat-sen Guards. In 1924, he studied in the Soviet Union, and joined the Communist Party of China that same year. He returned to China the following year in 1925, and during the Northern Expedition he served on the front lines as the commander of the 4th Army Independent Regiment, where he showed his bravery and was called the Iron Army. After Chiang Kai-shek's Shanghai Coup (April 12 Coup) in 1927, he led the 24th Division of the 11th Army in the Nanchang Uprising. He went south and participated in the Guangzhou Commune, and after the collapse of the Commune, he left for Germany via Hong Kong. In January 1938, he became the commander of the New Fourth Army when it was formed, and played an active role in the anti-Japanese war while expanding his base in central China, but was captured by the Kuomintang army during the Anhui Incident in 1941. He was released in 1946, and died in an airplane crash on April 8 while en route to Yan'an.

中国の軍事指導者。広東(カントン)省恵陽県の人。字(あざな)は希夷(きい)。保定軍官学校6期生で、1922年孫文(そんぶん)衛隊団の営長となる。1924年、当時のソ連に留学、同年中国共産党に入党した。翌1925年帰国し、北伐時は第四軍独立団団長として最前線にたち、武勇をはせ、鉄軍とよばれた。1927年蒋介石(しょうかいせき)の上海(シャンハイ)クーデター(四・一二クーデター)のあと、南昌(なんしょう)暴動に第11軍第24師を率いて参加した。南下して広州コミューンに参加、コミューン崩壊後、香港(ホンコン)を経てドイツへ出国した。1938年1月、新四軍が形成されると軍長となり、抗日戦に活躍すると同時に、華中に根拠地を広げたが、1941年皖南(かんなん)事件で国民党軍に捕らえられた。1946年に釈放され、延安に向かう途中の4月8日飛行機事故で死亡した。
