The Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, headquartered in Sapporo, distributes throughout the prefecture and is one of the leading daily newspapers in Hokkaido. It is one of the three major regional newspapers in Japan, along with the Chunichi Shimbun and the Nishinippon Shimbun, and its share of sales in the prefecture far exceeds the combined total of all national newspapers. In 1942 (Showa 17), in line with the wartime newspaper mergers, 11 major daily newspapers in Hokkaido at the time (Hokkai Times, Otaru Shimbun, Asahikawa Shimbun, Asahikawa Times, Shin-Hakodate, Muroran Nippo, Kushiro Shimbun, Tokachi Mainichi Shimbun, Kitami Shimbun, Abashiri Shimpo, and Nemuro Shimbun) merged to form the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper on November 1st. Its editorial mission is to shed light on the current state of affairs in Hokkaido and contribute to the development of industry and the improvement of people's lives, and its paper projects that focus on the lives of Hokkaido residents have won the support of its readers. Although it is a local newspaper, it has overseas bureaus in Washington, London, Beijing, Moscow, and other locations. It is also actively modernizing its editing and production techniques, including computer-based collection and distribution. Circulation is approximately 1,152,900 copies for the morning edition and 563,500 copies for the evening edition (January 2011).
