Born: 1557. Korosuir, Transylvania [Died] December 29, 1606. Prince of Transylvania, Kasza, Slovakia (reigned 1605-06). Hungarian national hero. With the help of the Ottoman Empire, he drove back the Austrian army from Transylvania, thwarted the ambition of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II of the Habsburgs to annex Hungary, and made him pledge to respect political rights and religious freedom throughout Hungary by the Peace of Vienna (6 June 1606). In domestic affairs, he defended the autonomy and religious freedom of the Hungarian nobility, guaranteed nobility to the Hajdu soldiers, and restored the freedom of the Székely people. However, he suddenly died in Kasza (now Košice, Slovakia) one year after ascending to the throne.
