Japanese: ハナアブ(花虻) - ハナアブ

A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family Syrphidae, or one of these species. The name is derived from the fact that adults of this species often visit flowers and that their morphology resembles that of horseflies rather than flies. It can also refer loosely to flies and horseflies that gather around flowers. Approximately 300 species of Syrphidae insects are known from Japan. Adults are relatively large, with hemispherical heads, and in many species the compound eyes of males are close together. The thorax is shiny or covered with fine hairs in green or black, but rarely produces setae.

双翅目ショクガバエ(ハナアブ)科に属する昆虫の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この類の成虫がよく花を訪れることと形態がハエ類よりもむしろアブに似ていることから由来した名である。このほか，花に集まるハエ，アブの類を漠然と指す場合もある。ショクガバエ科Syrphidaeの昆虫は日本からは約300種知られている。成虫は比較的大きく，頭部は半球状，雄の複眼は相接している種が多い。胸部は緑色，黒色などで光沢を有するか微毛で覆われているが，剛毛はほとんど生じない。
