Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro - Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro

Japanese:
Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro - Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro

A shinpa play by Kawaguchi Shotaro. The original story was published in the October 1934 issue of All Dokumono, which won the first Naoki Prize the following year. The author adapted the story himself and premiered it at the Meijiza Theater in Tokyo in January 1938. Shinnai tayu Tsurujiro and shamisen player Tsuruhachi are in love, but they have a fight over something trivial, and Tsuruhachi becomes the wife of a traditional Japanese restaurant owner. When they reunite at the Masters' Association, Tsuruhachi decides to return to the arts, but Tsurujiro, thinking of his wife's happiness, deliberately starts a fight over the art, shattering Tsuruhachi's dream and returning to a wandering life. The interesting material of the Edo-style Shinnai storytelling and the fast-paced performance captured the hearts of the public, and this was a representative play by the Hanayagi Shotaro and Mizutani Yaeko duo.
