A general term for toothed whales that belong to the family Pteropidae, a primitive order of cetaceans with long snouts that live in rivers and coastal areas. There are five species in this family: the Ganges river dolphin, the Indus river dolphin, the Amazon river dolphin, the Yangtze river dolphin (baijii), and the La Plata river dolphin. They are found in temperate and tropical regions from India to Southeast Asia and South America. Unlike common dolphins, they travel in parent-child pairs or pairs and do not form large groups. → Dolphins
