…He studied biology and chemistry at the Catholic University of America and became a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Notre Dame in 1918. His main achievements were in acetylene chemistry, and he succeeded in producing monovinylacetylene and divinylacetylene from acetylene in the presence of a copper chloride catalyst, which later became the technical basis for the development of the synthetic rubber Duprene (later renamed Neoprene, chemically a polymer of chloroprene) at DuPont.
