In Rome, bronze or marble benches called scamnum were installed in public squares, stone benches were built into the walls of buildings, and semicircular benches were installed in private gardens. During the Renaissance, wooden benches called cassapanca, which had a long box-shaped seat with arms and a backrest, became popular in Italy.
