…The first attempt at a scanning electron microscope was made in 1938 by M. von Ardenne of Germany, and the first commercial product was made by Cambridge Electric Co., Ltd. in the UK. In 1970, A. Crewe of the University of Chicago in the US developed the ultra-high resolution scanning transmission electron microscope, which is used in sample damage experiments and image processing.
