Originally meaning "hospitality for guests," this term refers to the rules for allocating lodgings when the ancient Roman army requisitioned private homes to use as lodgings. According to these rules, private individuals were required to provide one-third of their homes as lodgings for soldiers. It is generally believed that when Germanic tribes later settled in Western Roman territory, this rule was essentially followed in allocating land (in the case of the Visigoths and Burgundians, the Germanic side, who were the "guests," took two-thirds), but in recent years some have expressed different opinions.
