Died February 1650. French grammarian from Paris. One of the founding members of the Académie Française, he was involved in compiling the Académie dictionary, while in 1647 he published Remarques sur la langue française (Notes on the French Language) with the aim of purifying the French language. He stated that the only king in the world of language is idiom, and that correct idiom is the spoken language of the healthiest people at court and the written language of the healthiest writers of the time, providing a standard for the language that would later become the language of classical literature.
