A village in Yame County in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Population 4,103 (1995). It occupies a dissected lava plateau in the upper reaches of the Hoshino River, a tributary of the Yabe River. Formerly belonging to Ikuha County, the Hoshino clan who ruled this area prospered due to the Hoshino Gold Mine, which began mining at the end of the 13th century. The gold mine reached its peak during the Taisho period, but closed in 1943. It produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber and is the center of Yame forestry. In agriculture, Yame tea, such as Hoshino Gyokuro, flowering trees, highland tomatoes, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
