In vascular systems (blood vessels and lymphatic systems), blood clots or foreign bodies that have flowed in from the outside can flow into narrow vessels and block the flow of blood or lymph. The blockage is called an embolism, and the pathological condition that results from this is called embolism. Types of embolism include blood clots, fat, gas, air, parasites and their eggs, cancer cells, and bacteria, and are called thrombotic embolism, fat embolism, gas embolism, air embolism, egg embolism, cell or tissue embolism, and bacterial embolism, respectively. Gas embolism occurs when gas that was dissolved in blood under high pressure turns into gas bubbles again when pressure is reduced, and is seen in cases of caisson disease (decompression sickness). When an embolism occurs, blood flow to the distal part is cut off, causing tissue necrosis. [Kenjiro Ito] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
