The area is south-southeast of the Dead Sea and reaches the Gulf of Aqaba. It is in what is now southwestern Jordan. Semi-agricultural, semi-nomadic people lived here as early as the 4th millennium BC, but there are few traces of habitation from the Middle and Late Bronze Ages after 1900 BC. Egyptian records show the area beginning around 1200 BC, when the Semitic Edomites inhabited the area. It came under the control of the Kingdom of Israel around the 11th to 10th centuries BC. Due to its geographical location connecting Arabia and the Mediterranean Sea, Solomon used Edom as a base to trade with the Arabs and develop their resources, making him wealthy.
