Vela (English spelling)

Japanese: ほ座(帆座) - ほざ（英語表記）Vela

Its abbreviation is Vel. A major constellation in the southern sky. Modeled after the legendary Greek expedition ship Argo, Argo was recorded in Ptolemy's star catalog, but because it occupies such a vast area of the sky, French astronomer NL Lacaille divided it into four constellations: Vel (Sail), Vel (Stern), Vel (Compass), and Vel (Keel). Vel occupies the eastern part of the original Argo. It is located almost in the center of the Milky Way in winter, but in Japan, part of it is below the horizon. There are no visible stars other than Lambda Vel, which has a magnitude of 2.

略号はVel。南天の大星座。ギリシア伝説の遠征船アルゴをかたどったアルゴ座はプトレマイオスの星表に記載されているが，あまりに広大な天域を占めるので，フランスの天文学者N.L.ラカイユによりほ(帆)，とも(艫)，らしんばん(羅針盤)，りゅうこつ(竜骨)の4星座に分割された。ほ座はもとのアルゴ座の東部分を占める。冬の天の川のほぼ中央に位置するが，日本では一部地平線下にかかる。光度2等のλ星以外は目につく星はない。
