Pohang - Pohang

Located in the southeastern part of North Gyeongsang Province, on the delta of the mouth of the Hyeongsan River, it is Korea's largest steel city. It is divided into two districts, North and South. It has an area of ​​1,127.28 square kilometers and a population of 515,187 (2000). It was elevated from a town to a city in 1949. It was integrated with Yeongil County in 1995. It was a fishing center in the coastal area, but with the establishment of Pohang Iron and Steel (now Posco) in 1968, it developed into an industrial city based on the steel industry. Pohang Iron and Steel began construction of the Pohang Steel Complex in 1970 and has grown into one of the world's leading steel companies (annual crude steel production of 31.06 million tons in 2007). It is the terminus of the Daegu Line and the Donghae Nambu Line, and national highways in four directions converge here.

韓国（大韓民国）、慶尚北道の南東部、兄山江(けいざんこう)河口のデルタに位置する韓国第一の製鉄都市。北、南の2区に分かれている。面積1127.28平方キロメートル、人口51万5187（2000）。1949年邑(ゆう)（町）から市に昇格。1995年迎日(げいにち)郡と統合。沿近海の漁業の中心地であったが、1968年に浦項製鉄（現ポスコ）が設立されたことにより鉄鋼業を基盤とする工業都市へと発展した。浦項製鉄は1970年より浦項製鉄団地の建設をはじめ、世界有数の製鉄会社へと成長した（2007年の年間粗鋼生産量3106万トン）。鉄道の大邱(たいきゅう)線と東海南部線の終着駅であり、四方面の国道も集中している。
