The name of the area around the mouth of the Kino River in Wakayama City. It is also called "Saiga". In the Kamakura period, a manor called Saika-gosho was established under the ownership of Taira Chikamune, and Kii Minato was located within the manor. During the Sengoku period, the followers of Hongan-ji Temple formed the Saika Rebellion, and were called the Saika-shu. They engaged in water transportation as well as farming, and owned armed ships. They also carried guns, and during the Tensho period (1573-1592), they played a major role in the Ishiyama War, opposing Oda Nobunaga together with Negoro-ji Temple and the Negoro-shu, as an important military force for Hongan-ji Temple. In March 1585, Toyotomi Hideyoshi launched an attack on Kishu, taking the castles of Izumi, attacking Negoro, and then burning Kokawa. Finally, he attacked the Saiga clan, and the Saiga clan's final resistance was the battle at Ota Castle. 和歌山市の紀ノ川河口一帯をさした地名。〈さいが〉ともいう。鎌倉時代には雑賀御庄とよばれる平親宗領の荘園が成立しており，荘内に紀伊湊があった。戦国期には本願寺門徒を核に雑賀一揆を結成，雑賀衆とよばれた。彼らは農耕とともに水運にも従事，武装した船舶をも所持していた。また鉄砲も装備し，天正期（1573年−1592年）には本願寺の重要な戦力として，根来(ねごろ)寺・根来衆とともに織田信長に対抗，石山合戦に大きな役割を果たした。1585年３月，豊臣秀吉は紀州攻めに乗り出し，和泉(いずみ)の諸城を落として根来を攻め，ついで粉河(こかわ)を焼いた。そして最後に雑賀を攻めたが，この時の雑賀衆の最後の抵抗が太田(おおた)城での戦いであった。秀吉の水攻めにたえきれず城内の雑賀衆は降伏したが，主だった者50余人は首を切られ磔に処せられた。→石山本願寺
