In 13th century European monasteries, the gaps between the pillars separating the corridors from the courtyard were used by monks to read or write, and eventually came to be used as private spaces separated by boards. A carrel is the name for such small rooms, and came to refer to personal reading rooms in libraries, or, by extension, to desks in stacks for users. Because they were desks for one person so that they could be used in a relaxed atmosphere, today any single-person desk can be called a carrel even if it is not in a stack. They are mainly found in university libraries, specialist libraries, and prefectural libraries. In university libraries, they may be exclusively used by faculty members, undergraduate students writing papers, and graduate students for a limited period of time. There are also carrels for disabled people that can be used from a wheelchair.
