[Born] Bun'ei 8 (1271) [Died] May 7, 1342. A female poet of the late Kamakura period in Kyoto. Her name was Shoshi. Her father was Saionji Sanekane, the Grand Minister of State. Her mother was Akiko, the daughter of Minamoto no Michinari, the Minister of the Interior. In 1288, she became the Empress of Emperor Fushimi, and in 1316, when the Emperor abdicated, she was given the title of Eifukumon'in. She became a nun in 1316. Her posthumous name was Shinnyogen. Influenced by her father, who was an accomplished poet, and under the guidance of Kyogoku Tamekane, she began composing poetry at an early age. She participated in the "Thirty Poems of Fushimi-in" (03), organized the "Eifukumon'in Poetry Contest" (05), and was counted among the important poets of the Kyogoku school along with Emperor Fushimi. After the deaths of Tamekane and Emperor Fushimi, she became a leader of the school, and influenced Emperor Hanazono and others. His style is typical of Kyogoku, with a three-dimensional grasp of nature, a psychological tendency, and deep contemplation.
