A military commander in the early Kamakura period. Son of Munefusa. Yamatonokami and Kurodo no Shoshu. A warrior whose main base was Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture), he played an active role as a powerful vassal after rushing to join Minamoto no Yoritomo's uprising. As a reward for pursuing the Taira clan, he was given many territories and positions in Buzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture, Oita Prefecture) and Hyuga Province (Miyazaki Prefecture), and his descendants took the names of Kii, Nonaka, Yamada, Shigetsune, and Sada, and prospered mainly in Buzen Province. He is known for plotting to pursue the remnants of the Taira clan on Kikaishima Island in 1187 together with Amano Tokage. 鎌倉初期の武将。宗房の子。大和守,蔵人所衆。下野国(栃木県)を本貫地とする武士で,源頼朝の挙兵に馳せ参じて以来,有力御家人として活躍した。平家追討の恩賞として,豊前国(福岡県,大分県),日向国(宮崎県)に多くの所領,所職を給付されたことにより,その子孫は城井,野仲,山田,成恒,佐田氏などを名乗り,豊前国を中心に繁栄した。文治3(1187)年天野遠景と共に鬼界島の平家残党の追討を企てたことで知られる。建保5(1217)年出家して道賢と号した。<参考文献>恵良宏「豊前国における東国御家人宇都宮氏について」(『九州史学』24号)
