Bojo family

Japanese: 坊城家 - ぼうじょうけ

A branch of the Fujiwara clan, descended from Takafuji of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan, and the Kajiyuji family. Its founder was Kanjuji Sadasuke's male Gon Chunagon Juni Nii Toshizane (1296-1350), and his son Toshifusa took the name Bojo (Ogawa Bojo) after his residence. However, in 1540 (Tenbun 9), the family died out after Toshina's death, and was revived in 1594 (Bunroku 3) by Toshimasa, the third son of Kanjuji Harutoyo, who was posthumously awarded the title of Minister of the Interior. The family was of prestigious rank, and was given the highest rank of Dainagon. It is well known for its shuiju, who resigned from his official position and became a monk after being implicated in the so-called Horeki Incident during the Edo period. His grandson Toshiaki and great-grandson Toshikatsu both served as military messengers at the end of the Edo period, and were active in matters of relations with the Imperial Court and the Shogunate, including the imperial sanctions of treaties, the issue of the Shogun's succession, the Mito surrender incident, and the marriage of Princess Kazunomiya. Toshikatsu's younger brother Toshimasa and his son Toshiaki held important positions in the Meiji Restoration government, and when the Peerage Act was enacted in 1884, Toshiaki was awarded the title of count.

藤原氏北家高藤の流れ，勧修寺（かじゆうじ）庶流。勧修寺定資の男権中納言従二位俊実(1296‐1350)を始祖とし，その子俊房より居所にちなんで坊城(小川坊城)と号した。しかし1540年(天文9)俊名の没後断絶し，94年(文禄3)贈内大臣勧修寺晴豊の三男俊昌が再興。家格は名家。大納言を極官とした。江戸時代，いわゆる宝暦事件に連座して辞官･落飾した俊逸は有名。その孫俊明および曾孫俊克はともに幕末に至って武家伝奏を務め，条約勅許，将軍継嗣問題や水戸降勅事件，さらに和宮降嫁など朝幕関係に奔走し，俊克の弟俊政およびその子俊章は維新政府の要職にあり，1884年華族令の施行により俊章は伯爵を授けられた。
