Mexican author. While traveling around the world as a diplomat, he made friends with many intellectuals of his time, and had a great influence on later writers such as Borges, Fuentes, and Paz. His writings are diverse, including poetry, plays, and short stories, but he excels in witty essays that make full use of his vast knowledge. In addition to critiques of authors and literary works from ancient times to the present, he has written works such as View of Anahuac (1917), which reconstructs the historical aspects of Mexico City using historical materials, The End of Tule Island (1942), which contains many important essays on Latin American history and culture, and the pioneering literary theory Delimitation (1944).
