A deciduous tree of the legume family that bears swollen, pouch-shaped fruits native to the western Mediterranean region and Asia Minor. It reaches a height of 4 m. The leaves are pinnately compound, alternate, and 6-15 cm long. There are 7-11 odd-numbered leaflets, obovate, usually 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, and the upper surface of the leaves is hairless. A spike of 3-6 flowers blooms in June-August. The inflorescence is 4-5 cm long. The flowers are yellow, about 2 cm long, and the standard petals have prominent reddish-brown veins. The fruit is about 5 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, has a membranous, hairless skin, turns yellowish-brown when ripe, and contains a dozen or so small seeds.
