An evergreen shrub of the family Ilex (APG classification: Ilex family). Also called Kurosoyogo. It grows to a height of 3 meters. The branches are blackish purple. The leaves are thick, elliptical, 3-4 cm long, and serrated on the upper half. The flowers bloom in June and July and are white. Dioecious. It resembles boxwood, but the fruit ripens red and has a 2-4 cm stalk. When the bark is stripped off, it resembles birch, hence the name. It commonly grows in mountainous areas and is found in Honshu and Shikoku west of the Chubu region.
