Cow hippopotamus - Ushikaba

An evergreen shrub of the family Ilex (APG classification: Ilex family). Also called Kurosoyogo. It grows to a height of 3 meters. The branches are blackish purple. The leaves are thick, elliptical, 3-4 cm long, and serrated on the upper half. The flowers bloom in June and July and are white. Dioecious. It resembles boxwood, but the fruit ripens red and has a 2-4 cm stalk. When the bark is stripped off, it resembles birch, hence the name. It commonly grows in mountainous areas and is found in Honshu and Shikoku west of the Chubu region.

モチノキ科（APG分類：モチノキ科）の常緑低木。クロソヨゴともいう。高さ3メートルに達する。枝は黒紫色を帯びる。葉は質が厚く、楕円(だえん)形、長さ3～4センチメートル、上半部に鋸歯(きょし)がある。花は6～7月に開き、白色。雌雄異株。イヌツゲに似るが、果実は赤く熟し、長さ2～4センチメートルの柄がある。樹皮をはぐと樺(かば)に似るためこの名がある。山地に普通に生え、中部地方以西の本州、四国に分布する。
