Portuguese navigator and pioneer of the sea route to India. In July 1497, he left Lisbon in command of a fleet of four ships, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and arrived in Calicut (Kozhikode) in India in May 1498. He made a second voyage in 1502-1503. He was later sent as the Governor-General of India, but died of illness shortly thereafter.
