Gorgān (English spelling)

Japanese: ゴルガーン（英語表記）Gorgān

A city in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran. Formerly called Astrabad, it was renamed in the 1930s after being devastated by an earthquake. It is 37 km from the southeast coast of the Caspian Sea, facing the Gorgan Plain to the north and a small tributary of the Kalesu River. It has a long history, but in the 19th century it was the site of constant conflict between the Qajar dynasty and the Turkmen, and suffered from invasions by the Turkmen who occupied the plain on the north bank of the Kalesu River. Trade in grain, soap, and carpets is the main product of the city. Population: 162,468 (1991).

イラン北部，マーザンダラーン州の都市。もとアストラバードと呼ばれたが，地震による荒廃ののち，1930年代に現在の市名に変えられた。カスピ海南東岸から 37km，ゴルガーン平野を北に控え，カレスー川の小支流にのぞむ。歴史は古いが，19世紀にはカジャール朝とトルクメン族の絶え間ない闘争の場となり，カレスー川北岸の平野を占領したトルクメン人の侵略に苦しめられた。穀類，石鹸，絨毯の取引が行われる。人口 16万 2468 (1991) 。
