Boy soprano
A boy soprano before puberty. In medieval Christian churches, choirs were composed of only males, and sopranos were usually sung by boys. After the Protestant Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church began to permit women to sing, and by the 19th century female participation had become common, but boy sopranos were respected for their unique tone and expression, and are still used today for special expressions. 変声期以前の少年ソプラノ。中世のキリスト教会では聖歌隊は男子のみによって構成され，ソプラノは少年の声によって歌われるのが常であった。宗教改革後，ローマ･カトリック教会でも婦人の歌唱を許すようになり，19世紀には女声参加は一般的となったが，ボーイ･ソプラノはその独特の音色や表情のために尊重され，今日でも特殊な表現のために使用されている。【井形 ちづる】
