A boy soprano before puberty. In medieval Christian churches, choirs were composed of only males, and sopranos were usually sung by boys. After the Protestant Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church began to permit women to sing, and by the 19th century female participation had become common, but boy sopranos were respected for their unique tone and expression, and are still used today for special expressions.
