Japanese: ヒルギダマシ（英語表記）Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh.

An evergreen tree of the Verbenaceae family that grows in coastal mangrove forests (illustration). The roots run horizontally through the muddy soil, and many aspiration roots emerge vertically above the ground. Young branches are covered with scaly hairs and are grayish-white in color. The leaves are opposite, obovate-oblong, 4-8 cm long, entire with rounded tips, leathery and shiny on the upper surface, and grayish-white with dense scaly hairs on the underside. Small, cymose heads are borne at the ends of the branches, and produce small yellow flowers. The calyx is about 3 mm long and deeply divided into 5 lobes, with sharp lobes and hairy edges. The corolla is about 5 mm in diameter, opens flat, and has a short tube at the base.

海岸のマングローブ林内に生えるクマツヅラ科の常緑小高木（イラスト）。根は泥土の中を水平に走って，多数の呼吸根を垂直に地表に出す。若枝は鱗片状の毛があって灰白色。葉は対生し，倒卵状長楕円形で，長さ4～8cm，全縁で先が円く，革質で表は光沢があり，裏には鱗片状の毛が密生して灰白色。枝先に小型の頭状花序を集散状につけ，小さな黄花をつける。萼は長さ約3mm，5深裂し，裂片は鋭頭で縁に毛がある。花冠は径約5mm，平開して基部には短い筒がある。
