After serving as Secretary of State for Ireland (1830-33), he became Secretary of State for Colonization, and worked hard to pass the bill to abolish slavery. In 1835, he switched to the Conservative Party and became Secretary of State for Colonization in the second Peel cabinet (1841-44), and in 1844 he became a member of the House of Lords. However, he clashed with Peel over the repeal of the Corn Laws, and the party split.
