In the early modern period, the forms of use of common forests were varied, including village-wide commons, which were used by only one village, and inter-village commons, which were used jointly by several villages. Inter-village commons were formed as lordship became involved in agricultural forests, as new farmland expanded with the development of new rice fields and new villages were established.
