Benzo[ a ]pyrene is also known as benzo[ a ]pyrene. Its chemical formula _is _C20H12 . It is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It has a structure in which five benzene rings are linked together, and is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as benzene. It is known as a substance extracted from coal tar that has strong carcinogenic properties. Skin cancer on the face, neck, and scrotum of workers who handled coal tar and pitch was noticed early on in England, and was reported by London physician P. Pott in the 18th century.

ベンゾ[a]ピレンbenzo[a]pyreneともいう。化学式C₂₀H₁₂。芳香族炭化水素の一つ。ベンゼン環が5個つながった構造をもち，水に不溶でベンゼンなどの有機溶媒に可溶である。コールタールから抽出される強力な発癌作用をもつ物質として知られている。　コールタールやピッチを取り扱う労働者の顔面，頸部，陰囊などに皮膚癌がみられることがイギリスでは早くから注目されており，18世紀にはロンドンの医師ポットP.Pottによる報告が出されている。
