〘Noun〙① ("Hana" means a gift) Sumo other than the official sumo tournaments held in the spring and autumn. Originally, there was no admission fee, and the tournaments were held solely on the gift money of the audience. 〘名〙① (「はな」は祝儀の意) 春秋二期に興行した本場所の相撲に対して、それ以外の相撲。もと木戸銭をとらず、客の祝儀だけで興行したところからいった。現在では、本場所終了後行なわれる「引退相撲大会」「福祉相撲大会」などをいい、勝敗は、番付や、給料には関係しない。※狂歌・徳和歌後万載集（1785）三「春ならで秋のちぐさの花ずまふさそはぬ風に羽織ちりめん」② 花合(はなあわせ)と同じく、東西に分かれ、種々の花を出しあって優劣を競う遊戯。また、これに添えた遊戯的な相撲。※浄瑠璃・仮名手本忠臣蔵（1748）二「梅と桜の花相撲(はなスマフ)に枕の行司なかりけり」③ ＝はないくさ（花軍）(一)②※歌舞伎・名歌徳三舛玉垣（1801）三立「すりゃわたしらに此所で、惟喬様・惟仁様の、不徳をあぐる花角力、かの玄宗の戯れを、爰に写して」
