...The main theme of the Joruri play "Nisei no Kumi Obi" by Miyakoji Bungo was the late Kyoho or Genbun period (1730-40), with the elder daughter Ofusa, the younger daughter Koito, and Ofusa's husband who becomes deeply intimate with Koito, played by Sasshichi. The first Kabuki adaptation of this love story was "Satsuki Matsu Soga no Tachibana" (written by Horikawa Jizai, January 1754 at Edo Ichimura-za), which was adapted to incorporate the world of the Sogas, and was then performed as puppet plays "Ito Sakura Honmachi Iku" (written by Kigami Taro, March 1777 at Edo Gaiki-za) and "Edo Jiman Koi Shounin" (written by Tomosaburo and Onigane, March 1777 at Edo Hizen-za). The former was adapted into Kabuki play "Honmachi Iku Ukina Hanako" and performed at Nakamura-za in May 1777. His calligraphy works include Kokoro no Nazo Toke Tairoito (Colored Thread that Solves the Mystery of the Heart) (written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV, 1810) and Edo Ikugosai Sasshichi (written by Kawatake Shinshichi III, 1898). From "The Colored Thread that Solves the Mystery of the Heart"...The cast includes Onoe Matsusuke II (later Kikugorou III) as Omatsuri Sajichi, Matsumoto Koshiro V as Hanji Kurobei, Honjo Tsunagorou III as Bando Mitsugorou, Itoya's younger sister Ofusa and Kurobei's wife Ojimitsu as Itoya's older sister Koito as Iwai Hanshiro V, Sawamura Tanosuke II as the geisha Oito, and Onoe Matsuroku I as Kaze no Kami Kizaemon. The play is a rewrite of the earlier puppet play Ito Sakura Honcho Iku (written by Kigami Taro, 1777), based on an incident that occurred the previous year in which the second son of a samurai from the Ushigome area dug up a grave and committed necrophilia. Yamazumi Gohei, in an attempt to buy the freedom of Fukagawa geisha Oito, whom he has long been in love with, steals a precious Ogura shikishi from the Akagi family and pawns it at a pawn shop called Kanbaraya.... *Some of the terminology that refers to "Ito Sakura Honmachi Iku" is listed below.
