A private university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It is one of the Ivy League universities. Based on a charity school established in 1740, it was founded with the support of B. Franklin as the first non-sectarian university in the colonial period, and in 1755 it received a royal charter as the College and Academy of Philadelphia (its current name was adopted in 1791). Since then, the university has been a pioneer in the modernization of education and research, based on a pragmatic, secular, and liberal educational policy, and was one of the first in the United States to incorporate modern languages, physics, mathematics, and economics into its curriculum in addition to traditional classical subjects.
