Since maneuvers are the only way to conduct practical wartime training in peacetime for the use of military force, each country attaches great importance to them. In terms of the members, they are divided into those that use actual personnel and those that do not. The former train officers and soldiers to familiarize them with the various actions required for service in the camp and on the battlefield, and there are various stages, starting with basic ones that aim to complete their education. In terms of purpose and nature, the most representative ones can be classified into the following six types in addition to basic ones.

演習は軍事力の行使について平時に戦時の実際的訓練を行うことができる唯一の手段であるので，各国とも重視している。構成員の面から，実員を使うものと，使わない〈兵棋〉とに区分される。前者は幹部および隊員を訓練して，陣中勤務や戦場の諸動作に慣熟させ，その教育の完成をねらう基礎的なものを初めとして，各種の段階のものがある。その目的と性質によって，代表的なものを区分すると，基礎的なもののほかに次の6種類が挙げられる。
