A town in Nishi Matsuura District, occupying the upper to middle reaches of the Arida River in western Saga Prefecture. Arita, in the center of the city, has long been known as a producer of Imari ware (Arita ware), and is a prolific producer of ceramics and tiles, with active exports. It is home to the Ceramic Research Institute and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, and a pottery market is held in early May. The town is served by the Sasebo Line, and the Matsuura Railway branches off here. In March 2006, Nishi Arita Town, Nishi Matsuura District, was incorporated, and the town hall became the former Nishi Arita Town Hall. 65.85 km2 . Population 20,929 (2010). 佐賀県西部,有田川上〜中流域を占める西松浦郡の町。中心の有田は古来伊万里焼(有田焼)の産地として知られ,陶磁器,タイルを多産,輸出も活発。窯業試験場,九州陶磁文化館があり,5月初旬陶器市が開かれる。佐世保線が通じ,松浦鉄道が分岐。2006年3月西松浦郡西有田町を編入し,町役場を旧西有田町役場とした。65.85km2。2万929人(2010)。
