A town in Nishi Matsuura District, occupying the upper to middle reaches of the Arida River in western Saga Prefecture. Arita, in the center of the city, has long been known as a producer of Imari ware (Arita ware), and is a prolific producer of ceramics and tiles, with active exports. It is home to the Ceramic Research Institute and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, and a pottery market is held in early May. The town is served by the Sasebo Line, and the Matsuura Railway branches off here. In March 2006, Nishi Arita Town, Nishi Matsuura District, was incorporated, and the town hall became the former Nishi Arita Town Hall. 65.85 km2 . Population 20,929 (2010).
