A political union consisting of southern and northern Peru and Bolivia, proclaimed in October 1836. The possibility of a union between Peru and Bolivia had always remained after the failure of S. Bolivar's attempt at a grand union, but in the midst of a power struggle among the caudillos in Lima, Bolivian President Santa Cruz allied with Orbegoso, who had been ousted from the Lima government the previous year, and established a federation under Bolivia's leadership. However, no matter how much the two countries shared in history, the expansion of the federation's territory into the entire central Andes was a threat to the security of Chile in particular, and the Chilean government, in agreement with the Lima government, sent troops, which clashed with the federal army in January 1839 in Yungay, north of Lima, together with the Peruvian army led by A. Gamarra (1785-1841).

1836年10月に宣言された南部および北部ペルーとボリビアからなる政治連合。S.ボリーバルの大連合の試みが挫折して以来もペルーとボリビアの統合の可能性はつねに残されていたが，リマにおけるカウディーリョの権力抗争のなかで，ボリビア大統領サンタ･クルスが，前年リマ政府を追われたオルベゴーソと同盟を結びボリビアの指導下に連邦を樹立した。しかし両国がいかに歴史的共通点を有していたとしても，連邦による中央アンデス全体への版図拡大は，とくにチリの安全にとって脅威であり，チリ政府はリマ政府との合意により軍隊を派遣，翌39年1月，リマの北ユンガイでガマラA.Gamarra(1785‐1841)らのペルー軍とともに連邦軍と衝突した。
