A political union consisting of southern and northern Peru and Bolivia, proclaimed in October 1836. The possibility of a union between Peru and Bolivia had always remained after the failure of S. Bolivar's attempt at a grand union, but in the midst of a power struggle among the caudillos in Lima, Bolivian President Santa Cruz allied with Orbegoso, who had been ousted from the Lima government the previous year, and established a federation under Bolivia's leadership. However, no matter how much the two countries shared in history, the expansion of the federation's territory into the entire central Andes was a threat to the security of Chile in particular, and the Chilean government, in agreement with the Lima government, sent troops, which clashed with the federal army in January 1839 in Yungay, north of Lima, together with the Peruvian army led by A. Gamarra (1785-1841). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
