A mapping U is called a unitary representation of G if there is a corresponding unitary _{operator Ug} on the Hilbert space H (≠ {0}) for each element g of the group G and the product is preserved (i.e. Ug _{h =} Ug _Uh ). If G is a topological group, U must be continuous. U is _said to be irreducible if the _only closed subspaces ^of H that are invariant _{for each Ug} are H and {0}. If Utx = eixt ( ^{x , t} ∈ ^R ) _, then the mapping Ux defined by t → Utx is an irreducible unitary representation ^of the additive group R of the real numbers.

群Gの各元gにあるヒルベルト空間H(≠｛0｝)上のユニタリ作用素U_gが対応し，積を保つ(すなわちU_gh＝U_gU_hである)とき，写像UをGのユニタリ表現という。Gが位相群のときはUは連続であることを条件とする。Hの閉部分空間で各U_gで不変なものがHと｛0｝だけであるとき，Uは既約であるという。U_t^x＝e^ixt(x,t∈R)とすれば，t→U_t^xで定義される写像U^xは実数の加法群Rの既約ユニタリ表現である。
