The practice of radiation protection is called radiation management. Radiation exposure occurs when an individual human is in a radiation field. Radiation management consists of two parts: management of the radiation field, including the source, and management of individuals. From a practical standpoint, it is convenient to think of it as management in a radiation work environment, such as inside a nuclear facility, and management in other general environments. In order to carry out radiation management without any oversights, it is common to establish various standards derived from the radiation exposure dose limit, which is the radiation protection standard, and to establish and follow practical procedures.

放射線防護のための実務を放射線管理という。放射線被曝は，放射線場に個々の人間が存在することにより成立する。放射線管理は発生源を含めた放射線場の管理と個人の管理の二つから成り立っている。実務面からは，たとえば原子力施設内などの放射線作業環境における管理と，それ以外の一般環境での管理とに分けて考えるのが便利である。　放射線管理を手落ちなく行うためには，放射線防護の規準である被曝線量の限度すなわち線量限度から導いた各種の規準を設け，さらに実行上の手順などを定めておき，それらに従うのが通常である。
